Freya’s Courtyard & Garden: A Place for the Ache

Over the last two weeks, I’ve written about grief creating an ache that needs somewhere to go. Since losing Freya, we’ve been searching for ways to carry her love, light, and memory forward—not only for ourselves, but for the community that has walked alongside us. What began as an idea has slowly become something tangible: a courtyard and garden space designed in Freya’s honor.

This project is our first attempt to transform sorrow into something that can continue nurturing life. We imagine a space where children can play, people can pause, and moments of connection can quietly unfold. A place rooted in beauty, remembrance, and peace.

Today, we’re excited to share the vision for Freya’s Courtyard & Garden at Serena Hills and what this space will look like when it comes to life.

As we’ve walked this road of grief, we’ve learned how powerful meaningful spaces can be. They offer comfort, invite connection, and remind us that love continues long after loss. While this garden is being created in Freya’s honor, we know that nearly everyone carries the memory of someone they miss. We all experience loss, heartache, and seasons that leave us searching for places of peace.

Perhaps that’s why spaces like this matter. In a world that often feels hurried, disconnected, and noisy, we need more places that invite us to slow down—to pause, reflect, connect, play, and simply to be present with one another. Serena Hills is just the beginning. We hope to create more opportunities for remembrance, community, and healing in the months and years ahead.

We want to build these spaces alongside our community—to create something larger than grief alone, something that serves others and keeps Freya’s spirit present in the living world.

This garden began with an ache. We hope it becomes a place where that ache has somewhere to go. A place filled with laughter, play, conversations, reflection, and connection. A place that reminds us that even after loss, there is still beauty to create, life to nurture, and love to share.

Thank you for continuing to remember Freya with us.
